Eating Consciously With Your Mind, Body, Spirit, and Emotions

The reason so many of us are suffering from disease is because we are eating unconsciously, disconnected from the foods that we are putting into our bodies. Many people eat to numb their emotions, to relieve anxiety or depression, out of boredom, or many other factors, none of which involve a conscious connection to mind, body, spirit, and emotion.

Before you put a handful of chips into your mouth, it’s important to connect spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically, and ask yourself a few questions:

· Is this really what my body needs?

· Am I actually thirsty, instead of hungry?

· Am I eating this to satisfy an underlying emotion that I haven’t resolved or faced?

· Am I eating out of boredom and/or lack of direction?

· Am I eating consciously or unconsciously?

When we eat unconsciously, we tend to grab the convenient, processed foods that are already prepared and within easy reach. Most likely, the foods that you are unconsciously grabbing to fulfill an unresolved issue are acidic-forming foods. Cooked foods and processed foods tend to make the body more acidic. And when the body is acidic, then disease develops.

Disease cannot take hold in an alkaline body. When your body Ph level is alkaline, you enjoy better health and well-being. When you connect with living foods (uncooked), you are receiving all the enzymes you need to break down food and digest it properly. When food is cooked, it is considered a “dead” food, usually absent of many of the important nutrients and enzymes your body needs. It’s best to connect with the pure essence of food in its most natural state. Once food is broken down and processed (in many cases, multiple times), the nutritional value of the food diminishes. The more raw and unprocessed foods you can eat, the better!

Connect with your emotions. Is this food fulfilling an unresolved emotion? Or, is there a better way to face your emotions rather than eating to numb your emotions?

Connect with your physical body. Are you really hungry, or are you just thirsty? Would a glass of water suit you better? You can use a pendulum to determine whether your physical body needs certain foods or not. You can also use kinesiology (also known as muscle testing) to connect or “check in” with your physical body to see if what you’re about to eat is actually good for your body.

Connect with your spirit. Does this food make your spirit soar or sink to the floor with heaviness? Is it a heavy food with lots of spiritual baggage (like meat from an abused animal, or heavily processed), or is it light, whole, and pure?

We have an energy body. We can’t see it, though some technologies do allow us to see energy fields of living things. We process the energies of life in the same way, in through and out. All our positive emotional experiences we can now see as the flow of the energy of life through our energy system. It feels good. Positive emotions arise from flow of these energies of life through our energy system and energy nutrition is the learning, the feel good factor, the growth, the transformation we get from that aspect of life. This is healthy flow. This is in fact how we are designed, just as the body is designed to be healthy. This is our natural starting state, until life happened!

What are blockages in the Energy Body?

So, as we can get blockage in the physical body, we get blockage in the energy body. For example, we avoid because we can’t handle something, we cannot accept, we resist, or we hurt if we do accept, we hold on, we don’t understand well, we don’t see clearly, we can’t forgive and we feel bad. These are our painful emotions and we feel this in the body too.

In fact, where we feel it in the body is where the energy is stuck.

Events of Life Stuck in Processing

So when we are not in that state of mental health that we defined above, it’s because something happened to us, an event that we processed through our energy system, but it got stuck along the way. Maybe it was too big to handle for a young energy system. So there it stayed, that energy forever attached to the thought or memory of that event, held in the energy body, at the physical location that we can feel, when we recall it. And life continues to happen, events upon events, stored causing further blockage and behaviors that arise from these blockages because somewhere along the way, the support wasn’t there to help that person process and release those events in life. So growth and learning didn’t happen. Nourishment of the spirit to bring confidence and strength didn’t happen.

Furthermore a blocked energy system, has reduced ability to process future events, coping ability is impaired. We emotionally react. Eventually the discomfort of handling life can be so great that disconnection is required, numbing out the feelings and ongoing pressure leads to depression.

“How are you today?” and “It is good to see you again.” Then we can start by saying “I would like to complement you today on…” We then start to list all the things that we have accomplished today. They can be very little things like going for a walk, or chewing our food properly so that our digestion will work better, or that we made a step towards a better relationship with someone, or that we are doing more exercise, or we are completing one of our goals.

Our emotional body loves hearing all these praises and it will thank us afterwards by giving us a happy and satisfied feeling. After we are finished talking to our emotional body, we can tell ourselves in the mirror that we love ourselves.

Having a healthy respect for our self is a very important part of mind body spirit health. Telling our emotional body we love ourselves, helps a great deal in balancing our bodies, because many times we may feel that our life is missing love, or friendship, or we may be unsatisfied with our physical body and because of that unsatisfied feeling, our emotional body is affected.

However, when we tell ourselves that we care and we do love ourselves our emotional body becomes happier and is then more willing to listen to our needs.

Next on our list of mind body spirit health is our physical body. This is a very important part because our physical body has a big affect on our emotional body as well.

We need to keep our physical body fit, strong, and healthy by doing daily exercises, by eating right and by doing our best to live a stress free lifestyle. If we can achieve these things, our physical body will be in top shape. We will feel full of life, energy, vigor, strength and confidence.

Our emotional body will thank us for our efforts because from having, a well toned and healthy body, we create good remarks and admiration from others. We also have good sex appeal. Our emotional body loves these things, so by keeping our physical body healthy we start to help our emotional body as well.

The last part of our mind body spirit health exercise is to help our spiritual body. Doing this will greatly help the other two bodies work together nicely.

Our spiritual body

We can keep our spiritual body happy by giving in charity to others in need, by being kind and humble to others, by praising God or the universe, by setting an example for others to follow.

Anything that we can do that will help others in living better, in feeling better and in learning more about God or the universe makes the soul happier. Our souls are happiest when they are in tune with God or the universe. So, by doing acts of kindness and charity to the less fortunate ones, we can further our progress towards the greater good.

If we can practice on a daily basis, be kind to everyone, be humble to others, and learn to forgive and forget, our souls will develop a great happiness, which will help us to become balanced in all three of our bodies.

The Breath of Being – A Self-Reflective Case Assessment on Mind, Body, Spirit

In Latin, the word spirit means breath, as well as spirit, as well as air. In many ways, this word perfectly embodies the essence of this course “Mind, Body, Spirit”; for the term is as much about the breath in our body, as our spirit which is synonymous to breath, as it is to air, or in other words, the space to which illumination can occur.

One afternoon this Winter, I was walking with a friend who turned to me and said “Wake up!” Taken aback, I had no idea what she was talking about at first. As we began to banter about it, I realized this was the first stage of pre-contemplation. She had in fact initiated a conversation about something simple yet profound. That conversation in tandem with this course helped me to begin a process of contemplation.

My ambivalence came in the form of questions- Had I not been in touch with each moment of my life? In what ways had I been suppressing my own life? What does it really mean to be ‘in the moment’? As I continued to ponder these questions, I realized that certain events in my life had led me to believe that in some ways whatever I did or said didn’t really matter in the world. Perhaps it was a form of learned helplessness as a result of living without a father who wanted to spend time with me and a mother too busy to notice.

But through this interaction with my friend, I felt inspired to live a more conscious and present life. It wasn’t as if I had a follow up visit scheduled with her, but the next time we met I told her about my new sense of determination and asked for guidance. We walked to the bookstore together, and through the maze of many aisles, she selected a meditative book for me written by a famous Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk.

With the new school term well underway, work and a whole of host of other responsibilities, I admit the book made it’s way into some unnoticed crevice of my room with haste. I intellectualized many reasons why I could not have time to read a book that I didn’t really have much interest in. The most important reason of all being that “This book isn’t going to tell me anything I don’t already know” – a quick and seemingly logical conclusion at the time.

Then, one lone evening evening after our class, I found myself thumbing through the pages and I discovered I was right: this book wasn’t going to going to tell me anything I didn’t already know. It in fact, it told me everything I already knew…and how to know it better! Every story contained was about living in the present moment through even the most seemingly mundane of activities, and each became a story of relevance to me mirroring some facet in my own life. The risk of not ‘waking up’ began to seem more costly than I had anticipated and the possibility of living a richer life became a motivation beyond any extrinsic reward.

Taking action, I decided to begin with something really simple: my breath. Who ever though the act of conscious breathing could be so intensive?! I’d sit down on the floor intent on savoring every breath in my body. No sooner had I started to inhale the speaker in my brain would make an announcement – “Must wash my dirty socks, buy a dozen eggs…” “No!” I’d remind myself. “I should be focusing on my breath” I spoke in self-reprimand. I’d try again: inhale, exha- “The dog is barking outside and if it doesn’t shut up…”

Now it was staring to get personal.;) Noticing these cognitive distortions and with my emerging value for compassion as demonstrated in the storybook, I decided to let go of my self-judgments and reactive thought patterns. Instead, whenever I noticed myself falling into mental distractions, I gently refocus my intention on feeling my breath. There can be such an ease in the passage of air through our system, whether by way of our lungs or through our minds, and it enlivens the spirit. The more I practiced this meditation, the more I found myself noticing the breath contained in day-to-day routines.

A couple weeks ago I awoke and decided that rather than rushing to turn on the morning news, I’d stop and admire the view out my window. Instead of dismissing the tree that usually obscures my city view, I suddenly noticed myself feeling moved by the air circulating through the crevice of each leaf pair. I realized that I wasn’t the only one breathing in this moment, but that all of life reverberates together.

I shared my new found observation with my friend. As if she had already sat through each of our class lectures, she reflected back to me the new found sensations of my experiences. She kindly offered her support by suggesting a form of partnership in joining her weekly meditation group. I accepted. This is now my maintenance routine. Not one to be fueled by rote habit, but one of conscious choice to live without feeling helpless but able.

It’s not so easy for me to be present in every moment. There are many times each day when I find myself falling back to ‘sleep’ -feeling bored, wishing time would pass a little sooner, anticipating some event yet to happen. These are all distractions from the now. When I slip into relapse, I go to my meditation group, pull out my book, or simply stop to feel my breath.

This evening I am sitting here writing this paper about the journey of mind, body and spirit. All that I have learned and experienced in this term merges on to these pages as I breath. This is the spirit of Oneness.
